A Milestone of Inspiring Stories and Achievements

Last year marks a major milestone for Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park—we turned 25! Since the park was officially established by Congress in 2000, we've been dedicated to preserving and sharing the inspiring stories of the WWII Home Front. The year’s theme, “The Rosie Spirit: Continuing to Answer the Call,” honored the resilience and unity of those who shaped our nation during this pivotal time. In October 2025, we celebrated the park’s official anniversary, recognizing a quarter-century of honoring the contributions of those who shaped our nation during a pivotal time in history.

Our journey over the past 25 years has been filled with significant achievements. One of the most memorable moments came with the opening of our visitor center in 2012, a welcoming space that has connected thousands of visitors to the park’s compelling stories and exhibits. From the powerful images of women taking on new roles in the workforce to the incredible stories that shaped a nation, the visitor center has become a cornerstone of the park’s mission, showcasing the impact of the Home Front experience through its storytelling and community connection.

Celebrating All Year: Special Programs, Events and Activities

To recognize this exciting anniversary, we planned a year of engaging programs, special events, and hands-on activities for visitors of all ages. From historical reenactments and guided tours to family-friendly workshops and community events.

Honoring a Quarter-Century of History with the "Rosie the Riveter Trust"

We’re proud to celebrate this milestone in collaboration with the Rosie the Riveter Trust, whose unwavering support and leadership have elevated this anniversary year. As the park’s official nonprofit partner, the Trust has taken on a central role in organizing programs, events, and educational initiatives that bring the stories of the WWII Home Front to life. Their tireless dedication ensures that the legacy of resilience, unity, and innovation continues to inspire generations. Together, we’re creating unforgettable experiences and safeguarding these important histories for the future.

The Creation of the National Park

The park's establishment represented a significant acknowledgment of Richmond’s role in the war effort and the broader contributions of countless Americans who supported the war from home. Its creation helped preserve a vital part of American history, ensuring future generations could explore the profound cultural, technological, and social changes brought about during World War II.

Pre-2000: Advocacy and Foundations

• Late 1990s: Recognition of Richmond, California, as a significant site for preserving World War II home front history. Richmond retained one of the largest collections of intact WWII-era sites and structures, pivotal for telling the story of America's wartime efforts.
• 1999: The Rosie the Riveter Trust was established. This nonprofit organization began advocating for national recognition and federal support to preserve Richmond’s historic resources and narratives. The Trust played a leading role in lobbying for the park’s eventual establishment.

2000: Official Establishment

• October 24, 2000: President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 106-352 into law, formally creating Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park.
  • The purpose was outlined as preserving and interpreting the physical and cultural resources associated with the wartime industrial, governmental, and community efforts.
  • Congress emphasized Richmond’s unique historic assets, including structures like the Ford Assembly Plant, Shipyard No. 3, and human service institutions such as the Kaiser Field Hospital and the Maritime Child Development Center.

Early 2000s: Building Partnerships

• The park was conceived as a partnership park to maximize resources and expertise. Key collaborators included:
  • The City of Richmond: A primary steward of local historic resources.
  • Private Owners: Individuals and businesses managing historic properties.
  • Nonprofits and Organizations: Groups like the Rosie the Riveter Trust provided financial and advocacy support for preservation and education.
  • Community Engagement: Local groups and schools partnered with the park to engage underserved communities and share the history of the American home front.

Ongoing Development: Expanding the Vision

• Preservation Initiatives:

  • The National Park Service began working with partners to preserve key sites, like the Whirley Crane, SS Red Oak Victory, and Atchison Village, ensuring these resources remained accessible and intact.
  • Technical assistance was provided to safeguard structures and interpret their historical significance.
    
    

• Interpretive Goals:

  • The park developed exhibits and programs to tell layered stories of the WWII home front, addressing themes like industrial innovation, social changes, and the challenges of discrimination and inequality during the era.
    
    

• National Impact:

  • Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park became a hub for connecting similar historic sites across the U.S., fostering a deeper understanding of the home front's role in shaping modern America.
