Respect Wildness... Practice the 7 Leave No Trace Ethics

  • Plan ahead and prepare: Plan your trip carefully. Prepare for extreme weather, hazards and emergencies. Plan for the least experienced member of your party.

  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces: Hike single file in the middle of the trail or side by side in areas without trails. Camp in hardened areas only, not in meadows or on vegetation.

  • Dispose of waste properly: Pick up all spilled foods and trash. Disperse washing and cooking wastewater 70 adult steps (200 feet/60 meters) from camps and all water sources. Leave no evidence of your stay.

  • Leave what you find: Leave plants, rocks, antlers and artifacts as you find them for others to enjoy.

  • Minimize campfire impacts: Fires permitted only in attended fire ring and attended charcoal grill. Firewood and charcoal is not provided by Rocky Mountain National Park.

  • Respect Wildlife: Be sure you have combination for locks on storage boxes for food storage. Minimize noise. Avoid lakes and streams at dawn and dusk.

  • Be considerate of other visitors: Respect the quality of every visitor’s experience.

Site Location: Follow trail on southwest side of lake for about 0.5 miles until you reach sign that reads “Accessible Backcountry Campsite,” then leave trail by side of lake and follow path that winds through aspen and lodgepole pine to site (about 120 yards). Gear must be carried in from Sprague Lake Parking Lot.

Other Facilities: 2 picnic tables, 1 food storage box, charcoal grill and fire ring (camper must bring own firewood and charcoal). The fire pit and charcoal grill in this site are the only exceptions to the prohibition of fires in Rocky’s Wilderness. Campfires must be fully extinguished, and ashes must be cold to the touch upon departure, no matter the duration of time away from the site.

Water Source: Water is available from inlet or outlet streams of lake. Boil or adequately treat all water.

Key Regulation: Assistance dogs are the ONLY dogs allowed on trail by Sprague Lake and at site.

How to Use: Toilet and storage boxes have combination locks. The combination will be given to permittee when permit is obtained. There is a 3-night camping limit at site.

To Reach the Trailhead (TH): Sprague Lake TH: From Beaver Meadows Visitor Center follow Hwy 36 west to Bear Lake Road (approximately 1.3 miles). Turn left onto Bear Lake Road and follow for . 5.7 miles to Sprague Lake Road. Turn left onto Sprague Lake Road and drive 0.3 miles to the TH.
