The 51st Congress also legislated the first of the national battlefield parks: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Georgia and Tennessee and Antietam National Battlefield Site (now Antietam National Battlefield) in Maryland were both authorized a month before Rock Creek Park and Sequoia, General Grant, and Yosemite national parks. Stemming from different impulses and aimed at historic rather than natural preservation, the battlefields formed another component of the future National Park System.
