Richmond National Battlefield Park to Commemorate Battle of Malvern Hill

RICHMOND, Va.— Richmond National Battlefield Park invites the public to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the Seven Days’ Battle at Malvern Hill with ranger-led walking tours exploring the tactical maneuvers of the Union and Confederate forces and how this battle affected the course of the Civil War.

On Saturday, July 2, Park Rangers will be stationed at Malvern Hill from 10 am to 3 pm to greet visitors, answer questions about the battle, and point out sites of interest. Ranger-led tours will be offered at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. The 10:30 am tour, titled “What Could Go Wrong? Take That Hill,” will cover less than a mile of walking on gravel and dirt paths. The 1:30 pm tour, titled “To Charge with a Yell: The Battle of Malvern Hill,” will cover approximately one mile of walking on gravel and dirt paths and through open fields. Visitors are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear for the terrain and bring water. Both tours are free and open to the public.

The Battle of Malvern Hill marked the end of the Seven Days’ Battles that were fought near the Confederate capital of Richmond in the summer of 1862. Though the battle was a tactical victory for Union forces, Richmond remained in Confederate hands. General George McClellan retreated with the Army of the Potomac shortly afterward.

Malvern Hill Battlefield is located at 9175 Willis Church Road, Richmond, VA 23231. For more information, please contact the Richmond National Battlefield Park at (804) 226-1981, or visit us online at www.nps.gov/rich or www.Facebook.com/RichmondNPS.
