Richmond National Battlefield Park, in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs, is sponsoring a Memorial Day program and wreath-laying to honor and remember those who have died in our nation’s service, particularly soldiers and sailors from the Civil War. This annual event will take place on Monday, May 29 at 12 p.m. at the Fort Harrison National Cemetery, located at 8620 Varina Road.   The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s keynote speaker is Alexander Barnes, the Command Historian for the Virginia National Guard and author of several books, including In a Strange Land: The American Occupation of Germany, 1918-1923. Mr. Barnes retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Lee in 2015 after 30 years of service as an Army civilian. Following his talk, a wreath will be laid at the grave of Private George A. Buchanan, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fort Harrison. Special music will be provided by the Varina Community Choir.
