A New Future at Tredegar for the
National Park Service
Richmond National Battlefield Park to move Visitor Center operations at Tredegar
RICHMOND, Va.— Richmond National Battlefield Park has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar on the vital Richmond riverfront. Beginning in November 2019, the partnership will continue and thrive in a new location.
The NPS Tredegar Visitor Center at the Pattern Building will close on Sunday, October 13 at 5:00 PM. Richmond National Battlefield Park staff will begin to shift operations to the Pavilion area of the Gun Foundry building, across the plaza at 500 Tredegar Street. The Pavilion area, which contained the previous American Civil War Museum, will serve as the NPS visitor center, introducing and orienting visitors to both the Tredegar story, as well as the 3700 acres of preserved battlefields across the City of Richmond, and Hanover, Henrico, and Chesterfield Counties.
“This move marks the beginning of a new chapter in the partnership between the American Civil War Museum and the National Park Service,” said Doyle Sapp, Superintendent of Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. “The move to the Pavilion building will allow us to maintain a more sustainable arrangement over the coming years, while continuing to tell the complete story of Civil War to Civil Rights personified here by Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and our valuable partners at the American Civil War Museum--continuing the dialogue associated with these significant stories, people and places.”
“The National Park Service is a key partner with the American Civil War Museum in providing an exceptional visitor experience at Tredegar,” remarked Christie Ann Bieber, Interim Chief Executive Officer for the Museum. “We are very pleased about their relocation on our historic riverfront campus, and look forward to continuing our important work together for many years to come.”

Richmond National Battlefield Park consists of about 3700 acres of some of the most contested real estate of the American Civil War, in Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield counties. Experiencing the park’s battlefield sites and visitor centers usually takes a full day. A driving tour of the battlefields is available at any of the park’s sites.
