The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail mandate is to preserve, protect, interpret, reestablish as necessary, and maintain the trail system. Ala kahakai NHT works with governmental and non-governmental partners to encourage descendental-led stewardship of trails and resources.

When hiking the trail, please take precausion with sun protections, proper footware, watch for weather changes, and bring lots of drinking water. The trail may consist of 'a'a (sharp, brittle, and uneven), pahoehoe (smooth, shiny surface, and subtle indentation), stepping stone (waterworn stone), curb-lined (historically built), paved trails (even, wider, straigther, and more level), or jeep trail & modern roads (arrival of automobiles, modified new alignment were constructed).

Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail is one of 19 National Historic Trails in the network of science, historic, and recreation trails created by the National Trail System Act of 1968. For more information, visit ALKA website.
