Laurel Canyon Road Roadside Fuels ReductionCOMMUNITIES: Nicasio INTERFACE: Golden Gate National Recreation Area FIRE DISTRICT: Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department FUNDING PROVIDED: $21,000 (FY 2004) OBJECTIVE: Improve fire safety along a non-county maintained road. DESCRIPTION: This plans coordinates the planning and implementation of roadside vegetation management zones (fire apparatus clear zones), firesafe access/egress improvements, wildland fuel modification zones, defensible space strategies and a public education/outreach program. A total of 2.4 hectares (six acres) will be treated along Laurel Canyon Road in the Lake Nicasio area. The Laurel Canyon road area lies in an unincorporated area in the rural western portion of Marin County and leads to a small community of 12 single-family dwellings near Lake Nicasio. Much of the area that this project is to treat is steep where access is very difficult and characterized by decadent stands of woody vegetation. Nicasio Chipping ProgramCOMMUNITIES: Nicasio INTERFACE: Golden Gate National Recreation Area FIRE DISTRICT: Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) FUNDING PROVIDED: $20,000 (FY 2003) OBJECTIVE: Reduce hazardous fuels around area houses. Prevent the spread of the highly-flammable exotic Scotch broom. DESCRIPTION: This project would fund the costs of a chipper day program and defensible space maintenance in Nicasio. The project will combine community education (organized by NVFD) and hired hauling and chipping services. Scotch broom will be hauled and burned separately to avoid seed spread. Chipping and disposal of defensible space materials to be accomplished during the project year. The Nicasio community covers some 91 sq km (22,500 acres) of rural/wildland interface situated between Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes in the west and the much more densely populated communities of Novato and San Rafael to the east. Nicasio Firehouse ReconstructionCOMMUNITIES: Nicasio INTERFACE: Point Reyes National Seashore, Golden Gate National Recreation Area FIRE DISTRICT: Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department FUNDING PROVIDED: $25,000 (FY 2001) OBJECTIVE: Reconstruct a dilapidated structure which houses the Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department. DESCRIPTION: The Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department currently operates out of a garage which is structurally unstable. The building is leaning; the foundation and garage door are damaged. Reconstruction of the firehouse will improve operations of the Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department which serves 450 residences and responds to fire emergencies in an area interfacing with National Park Service lands. Total project cost is $55,000. Additional funding for this project is provided by local donors and the County of Marin. NPS/FSM TASK AGREEMENT NO. 7 |
