Description

New Orleans JAZZ NHP’s Song o’ the Day:

“Down by the Riverside”

New Orleans has always been a “naughty” sort of town.  By that, of course, I mean our fondness for and reliance upon all things “nautical”!  Nestled as we are between one of the world's most important commercial waterways, the Mississippi River and a 630 square mile estuary (Lake Pontchatrain) across which we may either float our boats or drive our cars (L.P. Causeway Bridge), we can't help it!

“Naughti-minded” as we are, we tend to notice things like today, August 3rd, being the anniversary of Chris Columbus sailing from Palos, Spain in 1492, in search of something other than what he ultimately found.  Likewise, today (in 1953) the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplished the first voyage underneath the North Pole on her way to Iceland!  And, of course, who among us “Y’ats” doesn’t brim with pride over the August 3rd, 1944, launching of the Liberty Ship George Pumutz by the Delta Shipbuilding Co.?  Which causes curiosity over how it largely evaded our notice that last week New Orleans TAI Engineers delivered a new 74'x24' passenger/utility vessel to the National Park Service for use at Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.   They christened her the USNPS "ANNIE MOORE", naming her for the first immigrant, a 15-year-old Irish girl, who signed the Ellis Island register. How ‘bout dat, Y’all?  Sounds like reason enough to celebrate down here by the riverside…
