At 1,942 feet, Deasey Mountain is the tallest peak in Katahdin Woods and Waters. The summit offers 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape. Access to Deasey Mountain is by way of the International Appalachian Trail, with the shortest hiking distance being five miles from Wassataquoik Gate. A ford across Wassataquoik Stream is necessary.

Sitting atop the mountain is the historic Deasey Mountain fire lookout. The lookout was constructed by the Maine Forest Service in 1929 and used for fire detection until 1969. It is one of the very few ground houses in Maine. Camping is not permitted at the peak or at the fire lookout. Please reserve a campsite or continue to hike to a designated site within the monument.

Restrooms: A vault toilet is located in the parking area at the Wassataquoik Gate trailhead.

Parking: Parking is available at Wassataquoik gate trailhead on Orin Falls Road.

Trail Etiquette: Leashed pets are allowed on this trail. Carry out all trash and food waste (fruit peels, shells, etc.). Do not feed the wildlife.

Use caution when fording Wassataquoik Stream. Review stream crossing safety before your trip. There is no potable water within the monument. Plan accordingly!
