These hand-painted signs on the side of a cliff in Echo Canyon, Utah, advertised Salt Lake House, a popular hotel in downtown Salt Lake City (opened in 1911), and artists W. I. Wolverton (1885) and J.A. Finch (1875). The signs were intended to drum up customers who needed lodging or desired a portrait or artistic memento of their visit. They post-date the emigrant trails era but probably were seen by passengers traveling on the transcontinental railroad.
To find the site, look for Summit County Tour sign No. 4 on the south side of Echo Canyon Rd, facing traffic approaching from the I-80 Echo Interchange. There is no formal turnout, but the road shoulder is wide enough for parking. Look up at the base of the cliff where spalling of the rock has created a slight alcove. The faded white letters can be hard to spot during some natural lighting conditions.
