Purple Threeawn is a perennial bunchgrass 12 to 24 inches tall. It grows in both warm and cool seasons. The plants are green with purple to red seed clusters, which cure to a straw color. Flowering occurs in spring and again in summer. They produce seed in early summer and fall. The grass can be found in loamy soils below 5000 feet.
