Spinning Toy

A Children's Toy
What: The spinning toy is one of many simple toys played with by children. This one was made with string and a wooden disk. A button could be used instead of the disk. In the pictures are other toys. Puzzles, the dancing man, a rag doll, and a penny whistle. The other wooden toy is for trying to get the ball in the cup. Most toys were easily made rather than purchased.

Many pioneer children didn't have much time to play with toys. Besides any school lessons, they helped their parents with many jobs during the day. They might churn butter, feed the animals, weed the garden, or help with washing clothes and dishes.

Who: These toys were made for pioneer children. American Indian children had their own types of toys. Some toys may have been shared across cultures.
