On September 8, 2006, Department of the Interior Secretary, Dick Kempthorne, and Department of Agriculture Secretary, Mike Johanns, announced that, beginning this Veterans Day, November 11, 2006, U.S. veterans, members of the U.S. armed forces, and their families will be admitted free-of-charge on Veterans Day to public lands managed by the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture.

This new annual fee-free day will be in addition to the fee free day on National Public Lands Day, held annually in September.  Unlike National Public Lands Day, which is always on a Saturday, the Veterans Day waiver will always apply to November 11, regardless of the day of the week.

Pipestone National Monument Superintendent Jim LaRock added, “We hope that people will take advantage of Veterans Day and renew their connection with the Monument.  Fall is always a good time to visit.  It’s not crowded and there’s always an opportunity for some good photography.  The Monument also provides a place of solitude for reflection on the outstanding  contributions of Americas veterans.   Please join us on Veterans Day.”

Veterans Day was established on November 11, 1954, with the signing of a bill by President Dwight D. Eisenhower changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day, and creating the occasion to honor those deceased and living who have served America in all wars.  Pipestone National Monument is honored to observe this day of significance.
