Free Entry on President’s Day Holiday

Pipestone, MN: Superintendent Glen H. Livermont announced that the Pipestone National Monument and other National Park Service (NPS) sites, around the country, proudly join the nation in observing President’s Day by offering fee-free entry into the parks on February 20, 2017.

National Park Service sites are located in every state and in many major cities, including New York City which is home to ten national parks. They are places of recreation and inspiration and they are also powerful economic engines for local communities. What better date than President’s Day, to honor our nation’s presidents, with a visit to a National Park.

Established by Congress in 1937 to protect the historic pipestone quarries, the site is considered sacred by many American Indians. Spanning centuries of use, American Indians continue to quarry pipestone which they carve into sacred pipes. The winter season offers many photographic opportunities of the prairie and is a perfect opportunity to explore American Indian culture and view all the natural resources of the tallgrass prairie. The Monument Visitor Center and Pipestone Indian Shrine Association, (gift shop) located in the Visitor Center will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
