A National Park in the Middle of an IslandIn the middle and at the narrowest part of South Bass Island lies a national park. At its center is a 352-foot tall, artist designed, granite memorial. Inside is a rotunda dedicated to the lives lost in the Battle of Lake Erie. At the top is an observation deck with views of the battle area and the peaceful border between Canada and the United States. The memorial is surrounded by 25 acres of lawn, trees, and flower beds. A long sidewalk connects the Memorial to the visitor center where tickets are sold for the observation deck. This is the best place to begin your visit. A 15-minute park video will orientate you to why this national park is here. Exhibits, artist renderings and ranger programs strive to deepen the story of Perry's victory and the resulting international peace. After 2023, when the seawall project is completed, take a walk along the lake's contours and overlook the waters where Commodore Perry and his sailors set sail. Also when the park bids farewell to the construction a Peace Garden will blossom across from the visitor center. The Memorial
