PETERSBURG, Va — On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Petersburg National Battlefield will participate in the 29th Annual Park Day. Volunteers will help restore a portion of the battlefield by removing an obsolete maintenance road (wooden planks used to take vehicles across wet areas) from the field near the Crater Battlefield at Stop 8 on the Eastern Front Tour Road. This event will begin at 9:30 am and will end at 1:00 pm. Volunteers will meet just past the parking area for Stop 8, the Crater Battlefield.

Interested participants should email Volunteer Coordinator at PETE_VIP@nps.gov, registration is limited to 35 people. Volunteers are recommended to bring water, sunscreen, gloves (if they choose), bug spray, and to dress for the weather. Long pants and closed-toe shoes that can get wet are also recommended. Work will involve bending and some physical strength. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled

About the Crater
On July 30, 1864, U.S. soldiers detonated a mine beneath a section of the Confederate line known as Elliott’s Salient, aiming to breakthrough into Petersburg. However, the subsequent assault by the U.S. Army's 9th Corps failed, resulting in intense hand-to-hand combat.
