PETERSBURG, Va.— Due to flooding from heavy rains on Monday night, the Tour Road south of Route 36 will be closed to vehicles at the Eastern Front until further notice. The Friend Trail and part of the Harrison Creek Trail along the creek are also closed.
Recent flooding on Monday night, July 14, 2025, caused damage to parts of the road and trails, making these areas unsafe.
The Eastern Front Visitor Center remains open. Pedestrians and bicyclists can use the tour road and the other trails as normal. There is also pedestrian access along Hickory Hill Road. Please see the map below.
The bridge over Harrison Creek requires significant repairs. Park staff need to make the bridge safe for vehicles. This work is in addition to major road work already planned to begin in August. The closure is expected to last to at least September 9, 2025.
The park plans to host the special event for the Crater Anniversary on Saturday, July 26. More details will follow, along with instructions on access to the Crater area at the south end of the Eastern Front tour road.
For the latest updates on road conditions, view alerts posted on the park website at www.nps.gov/pete.
National Park Service staff appreciates your understanding as we complete this emergency repair work. If you have any questions, please contact Petersburg National Battlefield at PETE_Info@nps.gov or call 804-732-3531.
