Pearl Harbor National Memorial: Preserving History for Future Generations

The Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a vital part of the National Park Service (NPS), which oversees more than 400 sites across the United States. The NPS is dedicated to preserving the cultural, historical, and natural heritage of the country for the education, enjoyment, and inspiration of both current and future generations.

At the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, we are proud of our diverse team that operates daily to maintain and enhance visitor experience and historical integrity. Our staff spans several divisions, each with specific roles that ensure the smooth management of the memorial and its significant components:

• Administrative Division: Manages operational logistics and support.
• Cultural Resources Division: Oversees historical artifacts and educational materials.
• Interpretation Division: Engages visitors through educational programs and guided tours.

Areas of Responsibility

Since its establishment, the National Park Service has been responsible for the administration of several key components within the Pearl Harbor site:

• USS Arizona Memorial (since 1980)
• USS Oklahoma Memorial (since 2007)
• USS Utah Memorial (since 2008)

These memorials were integrated into the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument in 2008, which also included historic sites such as the six mooring quays along Battleship Row and six Chief Petty Officer bungalows on Ford Island. The monument expanded to include significant sites across the Pacific, such as parts of the Aleutian Islands and Tule Lake, which are crucial for understanding the broader scope of the Pacific War and Japanese American internment.

In February 2015, the monument's responsibilities were extended to include the Honouliuli National Historic Site, the site of Hawaii’s largest internment camp during World War II.

Redesignation and Current Structure

In April 2019, the monument was redesignated as the Pearl Harbor National Memorial through the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act. This redesignation focused the memorial more directly on the sites at Pearl Harbor, including:

• The USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and USS Utah Memorials
• The six officer bungalows
• Three mooring quays
• The Pearl Harbor Visitor Center

Located adjacent to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial now serves as a focal point for preserving the memories associated with the attacks of December 7, 1941, and the ensuing Pacific War.

Regulations and Management

The management of the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is governed by specific regulations outlined in the Superintendent's Compendium 2019, which details the operational and administrative rules necessary for the preservation of this historic site.
