Pakoon Basin (Southern Section) - Tassi - Gold Butte

This page describes roads in the southwest portion of the monument in the Pakoon Basin from Tassi north to Whitney Pass and east to the base of the Grand Wash Cliffs. Roads are listed in numerical order, not by routes. Use this guide with the BLM Arizona Strip Visitor Map. All roads in this area should be explored with a high clearance four wheel drive vehicle with all-terrain tires in good condition. Some roads are only suitable for UTVs and specially modified short wheelbase 4x4s.

This is not a complete guide to all roads in the lower Pakoon Basin area. This list is made primarily of the numbered roads on the BLM map that are used by the recreating public frequently. For all other roads assume they are for specially modified short wheelbase 4x4s. Some are only for UTVs. Always turn around if it gets too rough for your vehicle.

  • BLM1007 - Usually appropriate for all high clearance 4x4s.
  • BLM1050 - Recommended for UTVs and modified short wheelbase 4x4s only.
  • BLM1638/1639/1640 and Lower Pigeon Canyon/Savannic Mine - UTVs only in Lower Pigeon Canyon due to very narrow roads and extreme dropoffs. Pickups and SUVs will not be able to navigate the tight bedrock turns along sheer cliff walls. Note: These road numbers are not currently shown on the BLM map but are included here because of their popularity.
  • CR111 - Usually appropriate for all high clearance 4x4s.
  • CR113 - Usually appropriate for all high clearance 4x4s. CR113 drops into the Grand Wash where 8 to 12 inch deep sand in the road will require four wheel drive.
  • Gold Butte Road/Whitney Pockets (Nevada) - Usually appropriate for all high clearance 4x4s. Crumbled pavement from Mesquite, NV to Whitney Pockets.
  • NPS1213 - Usually appropriate for all high clearance 4x4s. However, the road drops into the Grand Wash where up to 15 inch deep loose sand in one 100 yard section of the road will require four wheel drive at certain times of year.
  • NPS1215 - Recommended for UTVs and modified short wheelbase 4x4s only.
