EMINENCE, MO: Superintendent Larry Johnson announces that Alley Spring Campground will be temporarily closed due to a lack of water service. The temporary closure will be effective immediately so that the shower house and adjoining restrooms can be winterized against freezing temperatures.
The utility lines that provide water to the campground are located on the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Jacks Fork River near Alley Spring. During the flood at the end of April, the heating cable and insulation on the exposed water lines were severely damaged. The pedestrian bridge was also damaged in the flood and determined to be unsafe for foot traffic or repairs to the utility lines. The National Park Service has been working to find an option to move or safely repair the utility lines.
While those efforts continue, the water lines and associated facilities in the Alley Spring area will be shut down and winterized to avoid further damage to facilities. Once the repairs are completed, the park will re-open facilities traditionally available during the winter months.
Restrooms with running water have been unavailable at Alley Mill and Burr Oak picnic area since the flood, because of damage to the sewer lines that serve that area. Those restroom facilities will remain closed throughout the winter.
