EMINENCE, Mo - Maintenance crews at Ozark National Scenic Riverways are busy prepping the historic Storys Creek School for a new paint job! As part the 2023 National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event volunteers are invited to help Ozark Riverways Foundation freshen up the old school.
Want to be part of the efforts? Join us at 10 am on September 23 at Alley Spring as we celebrate the spirit of volunteerism with this public service project. The project is expected to conclude by 1 pm. We’ll also clean and oil the old desks and furnishings inside the school. Be sure to wear your painting clothes! In appreciation for your help, volunteers at NPLD will receive a “fee-free” coupon for free one-day entrance into a federal recreation site, in addition to an ONSR Volunteer t-shirt.
Storys Creek one-room school was built in 1896 just west of Eminence and welcomed area students until Shannon County schools were consolidated in 1957. The school was donated to the National Park Service and moved to Alley Spring in 1971. It withstood the 2017 historic flood which has contributed to paint peeling on the lower sections of clapboard siding.
Alley Spring is located 5 miles west of Eminence on State Highway 106. For more information on the event contact (573) 226-3945, visit the park’s Facebook page, or website at www.nps.gov/ozar. National Public Lands Day (usually observed on the fourth Saturday of September) is an annual event designed to encourage people to get outside and visit places like Ozark National Scenic Riverways. National Public Lands Day is also a national volunteer effort to encourage visitors to give back to the very lands we use to hike, bike, swim, explore, picnic, or just relax. It began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Now, eight federal agencies and many state and local lands participate in this annual day of caring for shared lands. It is the nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands!
Ozark National Scenic Riverways preserves 134 miles of the free-flowing Current and Jacks Fork rivers, the surrounding resources, and the unique cultural heritage of the Ozark people. Learn more at www.nps.gov/ozar. Find us on Facebook @ozarkriverways and on Instagram @ozarkriverwaysnps.
