Van Buren, MO: Join us for a “split and whittle” open house event on Saturday, September 22, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Heritage Workshop located at Park Headquarters in Van Buren, Missouri. This event is free and all are welcome.The Heritage Workshop is the home of the Institute for Traditional Ozark Crafts, a program at Ozark National Scenic Riverways that focuses on the cultural heritage of the Ozarks. The Heritage Workshop teaches and demonstrates many traditional skills that were the lifeways of the Scots-Irish settlers.
During the open house, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of historic tools and how they were used. The focus for the day will be woodworking with traditional Ozark tools, wood cleaving and riving, tool cleaning and preservation, and tool sharpening. Come have some fun and try out tools used by your father and grandfather. Participants who are interested in more in-depth instruction can learn how to join the Heritage Workshop to acquire these traditional skills.
