WASHINGTON – National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Regional Director Kym A. Hall has selected Tammy Stidham to serve as the National Capital Region’s Associate Regional Director for Lands and Planning. She succeeds Peter May who retired in July.
In this role, Stidham will manage planning, land acquisition, legislative and congressional affairs, the commemorative works process for the addition of new monuments and memorials, and the contaminated sites programs for 87,000 acres of parkland in the District of Columbia, and portions of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. She will represent the Secretary of the Interior on the National Capital Planning Commission and the Director of the NPS on the D.C. Zoning Commission.
“Tammy’s deep knowledge of planning and her commitment to public involvement, which improves parks and the experiences they offer to visitors and neighbors, make her well-prepared to lead these and other efforts for the National Park Service in the National Capital Region,” Regional Director Kym A. Hall, said. “Her expertise and perspective will serve the District of Columbia and beyond through her role and responsibilities on the National Capital Planning Commission and the D.C. Zoning Commission.”
“I am honored to serve in this important role with its responsibility for new memorials, park improvements and conservation, and listening to park neighbors and visitors on what they envision for the future of their national parks,” Stidham said. “I look forward to continuing and deepening the National Park Service’s relationships with state and local governments and commissions to create spaces that share our history, care for the environment and serve people in their daily lives.”
Stidham brings over 30 years of experience from a variety of NPS positions in the National Capital Region. She began her NPS career in 1989 as a summer lab/field assistant since then she has served as a geographic information specialist; transportation planner; chief of partnerships; administrative officer; Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act project manager; and chief of planning. Since 2018, Stidham has served as the deputy associate regional director for lands and planning where she managed planning and transportation projects for national parks, coordinated with local jurisdictions on external projects and managed the review of projects under the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.
Stidham holds a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Maryland-College Park. She and her husband, Emerson, along with their dog, Pea, live in Maryland where they raised their three children.
