WARTBURG, Tenn. – The National Park Service at Obed Wild and Scenic River is excited to announce the return of the popular “Lunch and Learn” program series this summer. In collaboration with Morgan County School Food Services and Frozen Head State Park, the series will offer free lunches and engaging ranger-led programs on Friday, June 27, and continuing on Fridays from July 11 through July 25, 2025.Made possible through the Summer Feeding Program, lunches are provided by Morgan County School Food Services in partnership with the Morgan County Healthier Tennessee Community, which supports local efforts to promote healthier lifestyles across all age groups.
The “Lunch and Learn” events are open to participants regardless of county of residence, reflecting Morgan County’s commitment as a designated Healthier Tennessee county to encourage wellness and active living.
This year’s program features in-person, ranger-led educational experiences at both Obed Wild and Scenic River and Frozen Head State Park. Each session combines an interactive presentation with a nutritious meal—making for a fun and meaningful way for families and youth to learn more about local natural and cultural resources.
Pre-registration is required for all programs held at Frozen Head State Park.

Friday, June 27th | 11:00 a.m. (ET) | Obed Wild and Scenic River – meet at Lilly Bluff Overlook Parking Lot | Hike to Lilly Bluff Overlook- The Obed has one of the most beautiful overlooks in Tennessee. Join us as we take the short hike to the Lilly Bluff Overlook and enjoy the spectacular view. |
Friday, July 11th | 11:00 a.m. | Obed Wild and Scenic River- meet at the Visitor Center Parking Lot- 208 N. Maiden StreetWartburg, TN 37887 | Our Sun- Have you ever wanted to learn about the physical properties of our solar system’s brightest and largest star? An Obed park ranger will have a telescope and binoculars, which are equipped with solar filters, that allow anyone to safely gaze upon the sun. Sunspots, prominences, and the sun’s plasma chromosphere are just a few of the neat things that can be witnessed with proper protection. |
Friday, July 18th | 11:00 a.m. | Frozen Head State Park- Meet at the Old Mac Trailhead | Interpretive Loop Hike - On this half mile trek, we’ll encounter historic Civilian Conservation Corps camps, unique rock formations, and a beautiful, winding creek, as well as many enchanting pieces of history that bring the park to life! Venture out to discover how all living things connect, crafting a story and how this story creates biological diversity. Friday July 25th | 11:00 a.m. | Obed Wild and Scenic River – meet at the Nemo Picnic Area | Let’s go Kayaking! – Bring your bathing suits and towels. We will provide the kayaks, helmets, and life jackets. Together we will learn the basics of kayaking and explore the calm waters of the Nemo area. |
