Obed Announces Rock Climbing & Paddling Program for Sixth Grade Homeschooled Students
Six years ago, with funding from a National Park Foundation Impact Grant, Obed Wild and Scenic River launched its “National Park in Your Backyard” program for Morgan County sixth grade students. As in previous years, the opportunity to participate in this program will be extended to sixth grade students that are homeschooled or who attend schools other than public schools.

2016 Tourism to Obed WSR Created over $4 Million in Economic Benefits: Report shows visitor spending supports 50 jobs in local economy
A new National Park Service report shows that 231,389 visitors to Obed Wild and Scenic River in 2016 spent $4,089,300 in communities near the park. That spending supported 50 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $3,893,600.

Professional Development Opportunity for Teachers at Obed WSR
Obed WSR is recruiting teachers to participate in the 2017 Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) program. The TRT program is a professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers to spend the summer acquiring new skills in experiential learning through a program provided by a partnership between the National Park Service and the University of Colorado Denver.

2017 Cumberland Trail Work Day
Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning and Obed Wild & Scenic River will be hosting the annual Cumberland Trail Work Day on Saturday, February 18. Trail maintenance will be performed on the 2.5-mile section of the Cumberland Trail between Rock Creek Campground and Alley Ford.

Ban on Open Fires within Obed WSR Lifted December 15
Recent rain showers and cooler weather have reduced fire activity and Obed Wild & Scenic River officials have lifted the ban on open fires in the park effective December 15.

Nemo Picnic Area Improvement Project Scheduled December 1-2
Obed WSR will be rehabilitating the Nemo Picnic Area, with work scheduled to begin December 1. The picnic area will be closed for paving Friday, December 2. Otherwise the area will remain open with access to the comfort station, parking, and river access.

The 17th Annual Obed Adopt-A-Crag Volunteer Event was a Huge Success
On September 10, approximately 80 volunteers helped with projects including trail restoration and several beautification projects. The efforts of these caring climbers left the park looking clean and beautiful.

Obed WSR Receives Field Trip Grant from the National Park Foundation
Obed WSR encourages all fourth graders to visit the park this year as part of the Every Kid in a Park program. The program gives fourth grade students, and those accompanying them, free access to more than 2,000 public lands and waters nationwide for a year.

Obed Adopt-a-Crag Event Celebrates National Public Lands Day on September 10, 2016
Obed Wild and Scenic River will celebrate National Public Lands Day by teaming up with the East Tennessee Climbers Coalition (ETCC) to host the 17th annual Adopt-a-Crag event at the park on Saturday, September 10. Volunteers are needed to help with several projects such as general trail maintenance and litter pickup.

On July 18, Brenda Cate concluded her Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) experience at Obed WSR. A Special Education Teacher at Midtown Elementary School, in Harriman, Tennessee, Brenda worked as Obed’s 2016 TRT, where her main focus was to help find ways to offer inclusive programs for persons of different abilities.

Obed Proposes to Increase Campsite Fees for Rock Creek Campground
Obed Wild and Scenic River is proposing to increase the nightly fee rate at Rock Creek Campground on October 1, 2016. At the same time, the park will also add a feature that allows visitors to reserve, in advance, campground sites by phone or internet as well as in person.

Morgan County Sixth Graders Take Part in the 2016 “National Park in Your Backyard” Program
For the fifth year in a row, every sixth grader in Morgan County has had the opportunity to participate in the award-winning “National Park in Your Backyard” program at Obed Wild & Scenic River. Approximately 300 students took part in the program over a 6-day period in May.
