Visitor dies after falling from Lilly Bluff Overlook
At approximately 3 pm on Sunday, October 15, Obed staff received a call reporting a man who had fallen from Lilly Bluff Overlook after climbing over the railing. Responding park rangers located the body of a 30-year-old male.

Obed Wild & Scenic River was selected to receive a 2017 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation, which will be utilized to cover the transportation cost to bring fourth grade students to experience their national park and foster connections to the natural world.

Obed Adopt-a-Crag Celebrates National Public Lands Day on September 9, 2017
Obed Wild & Scenic River will celebrate National Public Lands Day by teaming up with the East Tennessee Climbers Coalition to host the 18th annual Adopt-a-Crag event at the park on Saturday, September 9. Volunteers are needed to help with several projects such as general trail maintenance and litter pickup.

Special Use Permits Clarifications to Go Into Effect October 1 2017
There are over 130,000 acres of opportunities for special events within Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area and Obed Wild and Scenic River. To help ensure resource protection, visitor safety and make sure that other visitors’ experience is not significantly impeded, special events such as weddings and endurance races require a special use permit.

Park Rangers Rescue Stranded Paddler on Emory River
At approximately 12:00 PM on Saturday, June 24, park personnel received a call from Morgan County 9-1-1 requesting assistance about a stranded paddler on the Emory River, located outside the park.

Obed Announces Rock Climbing & Paddling Program for Sixth Grade Homeschooled Students
Six years ago, with funding from a National Park Foundation Impact Grant, Obed Wild and Scenic River launched its “National Park in Your Backyard” program for Morgan County sixth grade students. As in previous years, the opportunity to participate in this program will be extended to sixth grade students that are homeschooled or who attend schools other than public schools.

2016 Tourism to Obed WSR Created over $4 Million in Economic Benefits: Report shows visitor spending supports 50 jobs in local economy
A new National Park Service report shows that 231,389 visitors to Obed Wild and Scenic River in 2016 spent $4,089,300 in communities near the park. That spending supported 50 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $3,893,600.

Professional Development Opportunity for Teachers at Obed WSR
Obed WSR is recruiting teachers to participate in the 2017 Teacher-Ranger-Teacher (TRT) program. The TRT program is a professional development opportunity for K-12 teachers to spend the summer acquiring new skills in experiential learning through a program provided by a partnership between the National Park Service and the University of Colorado Denver.

2017 Cumberland Trail Work Day
Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning and Obed Wild & Scenic River will be hosting the annual Cumberland Trail Work Day on Saturday, February 18. Trail maintenance will be performed on the 2.5-mile section of the Cumberland Trail between Rock Creek Campground and Alley Ford.

Nemo Picnic Area Improvement Project Scheduled December 1-2
Obed WSR will be rehabilitating the Nemo Picnic Area, with work scheduled to begin December 1. The picnic area will be closed for paving Friday, December 2. Otherwise the area will remain open with access to the comfort station, parking, and river access.
