The North Country Trail is built and maintained primarily by volunteers in cooperation with our official partners, the North Country Trail Association. Since the early 1980s, the North Country Trail Association with its organized chapters and trail affiliates has been the principal partner with the National Park Service working to develop and maintain the trail. The North Country Trail Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to build and maintain the trail and tell its story. With a small National Park Service Staff, we rely on our partners and the volunteers for much of the “field work” in their local areas. Volunteers are continually developing new trail segments, improving existing segments and obtaining landowners permission for the trail to cross their land.
