Cascade River Road provides access to Cascade Pass Trailhead and other scenic recreational opportunities along the way. Cascade River Road leaves State Route 20 at Marblemount and extends 23.1 miles (37 km) to Cascade Pass Trailhead. The first 1/3 of the road is paved (to mile 10), then becomes a rough gravel road. After the Eldorado parking area (mile 20), the road climbs steeply to Cascade Pass Trailhead. This 3-mile section of road is very narrow with steep drop offs at the edge of the road. There are limited areas to pass opposing traffic and no areas to turnaround until the end of the road. At times, ruts and washouts are impassable without a high clearance vehicle. The road typically opens to Cascade Pass Trailhead parking area by the end of June, except when heavy snow or storm damage prevents the opening of the road until early July. Updates are provided on the Road Conditions page. This is a popular use area during the summer season. Be prepared for the environment; know the current status of weather in higher elevations in the North Cascades, which differs from lower valley weather and conditions. Weather can change quickly, be prepared. Parking is limited in areas along Cascade River Road and fills quickly. Congestion and parking issues occur during the busy summer season, mid-July through early October. Consider the time of day to start your trip. Parking areas are less congested in the mornings.
