NORTH CASCADES: People, Places and Stories original production highlights issues and stories of individuals who protect and promote our national treasure. Imagine a place that is one of the largest and wildest left in the United States. A diverse landscape that has more glaciers than any other place outside of Alaska; where clear, cold rivers give rise to much of the fresh water that flows into Puget Sound and the Columbia River; and is hometo one of the largest winter migrations of bald eagles and a healthy return of the magnificent gray wolf. This place is right in our backyard; our own national treasure-the North Cascades. A group of businesses and organizations-including The Wilderness Society, REI, the North Cascades National Park, the Mt. Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest, the Okanogan - Wenatchee National Forest, the North Central Washington Economic Development District, the North Cascades Institute, KCTS 9 and the Cascade Loop Scenic Highway-have come together as a part of the North Cascades Initiative to connect people and communities to the North Cascades and inspire the next generation of stewards. This film specially produced by KSTS 9 features exclusive stories and Moderated by Enrique Cerna. It is a special local follow-up to Ken Burn's series: The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Superintendent Chip Jenkins of North Cascades National Park provides a behind-the-scenes look at significance of the park and Saul Weisberg of North Cascades Institute will talk a bit about the education NCI is doing within the park. North Cascades Institute and North Cascades National Park are grateful to a number of local peer organizations that are helping including The Nature Conservancy, Friends of the (Anacortes) Forest, Skagit Land Trust and the Skagit Watershed Council. These colleagues are working hard to protect and conserve one of our country's greatest treasures. January 27: Snagging Hair and Sniffing Scat : How to Get into a Bear's Genes, Roger Christophersen, wildife biologist North Cascades National Park, Dr. Robert Long & Paula MacKay, Wildlife biologists with the Western Transportation Institute, Montana State University This talk addresses habitat connectivity for carnivores in the Cascades, and the various (noninvasive) ways we're studying how highways may be affecting connectivity.
