The North Cascades National Park Education Team is excited to welcome you and your students to the park. All in-park education programs take place in the Newhalem, WA area.

Ranger-led field trips range from 3-3.5 hours including a 30-minute break for lunch but can be modified based on teacher needs. Field trips require one in-school pre-visit lesson from a ranger the week before the field trip.

 

Field Trip Options

Ranger led field trips align with the Next Generation Science Standards for your grade. Students will have the opportunity to learn in an outdoor environment with hands on acitvities and new approaches to learning.

In-park ranger guided programs are offered weekly Tuesday through Thursday, mid-September through mid-November and mid-February through mid-June.

Third Grade - Habitat

Location: Newhalem area
Next Generation Science Standards: 3-LS2-1, 3-LS4-3, 3-5-ETS1-2
Students will explore different habitats along a 1.6-mile guided hike with a ranger and learn about specific animals that live in the North Cascades ecosystem.

Fourth Grade - Geology

Location: Begins at the North Cascades Visitor Center, travels and ends at Diablo Lake overlook
Next Generation Science Standards: 4-ESS1-1, 4-ESS2-1
Students will learn about the geology of the North Cascades and make observations to guess what events may have occurred in the past that shaped the landscape as we see it today. This field trip is approximately twenty minutes shorter to accommodate the longer bus travel on the way back.

Fifth Grade - Forest Ecology

Location: North Cascades Visitor Center
Next Generation Science Standards: 5-LS1-1, 5-LS2-1
Students will explore on a 1.8-mile guided hike with a ranger to learn about the native plants growing in North Cascades and explore how energy flows in an ecosystem.

Reserving a Classroom Visit!

Once you fill out the form and submit it, your reservation request will be emailed to staff members from the park, and they will contact you to finalize a visit date and time, as well as a time for the ranger to come into the classroom the week prior. Due to staffing levels and other reservations, we may not have the desired date available but will work with you to find another date for your visit. 
While filling out the form, please keep in mind:

• Education Programs are only offered Tuesday-Friday.

• Ranger-led programs generally last up to four hours, not including driving time. 

• Chaperones are expected to attend and support each program – 1 per 10 student ratio.

Authority: Public Law 114-289 National Park Service Centennial Act and 54 U.S.C. 100701 Protection, interpretation, and research in System.
