Fisher Chimneys/Sulphide Glacier 8/28/15

August 28, 2015 Posted by: Climbing Ranger

Fisher Chimney route is in good, late season condition. Winnie's Slide is HARD. Consider steel crampons, ice screws and a second tool depending on comfort level. The same goes for getting onto the upper Curtis Glacier, and exiting up onto the Sulphide Glacier. Travel through the upper Curtis is straightforward with the crux coming before the Devil's Highway - expect to negotiate a failing snow bridge/crevasse with some exposure. A little tricky but with some protection , it goes without problem. There is water at the bivy areas above and below Winnie's slide.

The Sulphide Glacier is also in good shape. Sections of the lower glacier are down to firn, especially around the lower bivy area. The middle section of the route has a few open cravasses that are easily passable. The same goes for the upper Sulphide. Overall, it's in great shape, just a little thinner than usual.

Plenty of water at the lower bivy area and some at the upper, although not as plentiful. Don't forget there are two composting toilets and please don't camp on the grass covered ledges near the upper composter.  Also, the mice are RAMPANT at the lower bivy area so please practice good food storage!
