Service animals are allowed in national park sites. See the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) definition of a service animal. (Frequently Asked Questions about Service Animals and the ADA | ADA.gov)

Emotional support animals are not considered service animals by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and service animals must be well behaved and not cause disturbances to visitors, staff, or resources.

For the safety and wellbeing of your service animal, please keep in mind:

  • Weather and Site Conditions: Roads and walkways may be slippery when wet or during winter in snowy or icy conditions. There are paved streets and dirt roads in the town, they may be uneven with potholes and other hazards.

  • Animal Waste: All animal waste should be immediately collected by the animal's handler and disposed of in a trash can. Trash cans are available throughout the site. There are no plastic bags available, so please remember to bring your own.

  • Other Animals: Nicodemus is an active community with pets and wildlife living in and around town. Although our site generally sees smaller animals like cats, squirrels, and small birds, Nicodemus occasionally sees coyotes, hawks, or other larger wildlife. Please be careful and aware as even small animals can cause issues for service animals unfamiliar with wildlife.

Pet Information

  • Pets are allowed in the town but must be kept on a leash at all times.

  • Pets are not allowed in any of the site’s historic buildings, including the A.M.E. Church and the Township Hall, with the exception of trained service animals.

  • Pets may not be tied to natural or manmade features such as trees, fences, posts, or other historic objects.

  • Pets should not be left in parked vehicles.
