GLEN JEAN, W.Va. — This fall, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve will conduct prescribed burns in two designated areas to support ecosystem health and reduce wildfire risk in the park and local communities. The controlled burns are essential for removing invasive species, encouraging native plant growth and safeguarding the park’s natural and cultural, resources, watersheds and structures.

The prescribed burns are planned between Oct. 15 and Dec. 31, with exact dates determined by weather conditions. Each burn will last several hours and will only proceed when conditions meet strict safety parameters. Prior to ignition, fire managers will access current weather and fuel conditions to ensure they align with established guidelines.

 War Ridge/Backus Mountain Area
The first burn will cover approximately 212 acres near War Ridge Campground, located approximately 1.7 miles south of County Road 41 and approximately 2.5 miles from the Backus community. While traffic on County Road 41 should not be affected, temporary closures may occur at War Ridge Campground and County Road 22/7 (War Ridge Rd).

Arrowhead Trails System
The second prescribed burn will be about 195 acres within the Arrowhead Trails System, 2.5 miles southeast of Fayetteville. Traffic on Route 9 (Gatewood Road) is expected to remain unaffected, but temporary closures may be necessary for the Arrowhead Trails and sections of the Craig Branch Trail.

All park closures and updates will be posted on the park’s website at nps.gov/neri and on the park’s social media platforms.
