Position Description
Job Title: Reception Assistant
Major Duties: Staff the park headquarters reception desk including answering the telephone, transferring phone calls, and relaying messages to appropriate staff members. Greet all Headquarters visitors upon entering, and direct them to the appropriate staff member or provide them with information and directions that will facilitate a safe and informed visit. Distribute maps and brochures as requested. Inform visitors of potential safety hazards. Collect and mail out brochures and other information requested by the public. Perform other office duties as assigned.
Work Location: Park Headquarters, New River Gorge National River, Glen Jean, WV
Work Environment: Volunteer will have daily contact with park staff members and will have frequent contact with visiting public, park land owners, and park neighbors. Some contacts may deal with problems, complaints, or conflicts. Walking, bending, lifting, and sedentary work is required. Work is performed in-doors.
Work Schedule: 4 - 40 hours/week; 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday, year-round
Clothing: VIP shirt, name badge, and hat supplied by park, to be worn with jeans, pants, or slacks (not faded and without holes) and tennis or dress shoes
Skill and qualifications needed: Required: Ability to communicate and work with the public, Ability to provide directions and current information about the park and local area. Skill in typing and computer experience. Desired: Previous experience in working with the public and answering an office phone system. Personal knowledge of the natural and cultural history of the park. Knowledge of the park and area road and trail systems.
