Job Title:

Adopt-A-Trail Volunteer – Monitoring

Major Duties:

  1. Patrol trail at least 4 times during adoption year
  2. Report downed trees with location and description to park staff
  3. Report muddy areas, landslides, social trails, graffiti, etc to park staff
  4. Inspect the condition of signage
  5. Submit a completed trail report after each work day
  6. Commit to program for at least 1 year
  7. Make visitor contacts and refer questions to appropriate park staff
  8. Clear debris such as small easy to move limbs and rocks from trail.
  9. Report issues such as downed trees, landslides, resource damage, and/or vandalism to trail staff

Work Location:

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
Gauley River National Recreation Area
Bluestone National Scenic River

Work Environment:

All work is performed in a natural outdoor environment where poisonous plants, stinging insects, and snakes are present. Weather can change quickly and exposure to rain and other inclement weather may occur. Heavy. Hiking multiple miles in steep, mountainous terrain is also required. Volunteers must not have potential emergency medical problems that. Volunteer must not have any potential medical problems that would complicate work in remote areas.

Work Schedule:

At least 4 trail maintenance days during adoption year

Clothing:

Volunteers must wear either a trail volunteer shirt or hat while working. Good footwear for hiking is required. Rain gear is recommended. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can be requested from the NPS

Skill and qualifications needed:

Required: Willingness to commit to program for at least 1 year. Ability to perform trail work. Ability to communicate and work with others. Ability to work safely with hand tools and other people. Ability to track volunteer hours and submit trail reports to trails staff.

Desired: Knowledge of basic trail maintenance procedures. Knowledge of the park and park resources.
