In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, April 16-24, 2016 has been declared National Park Week. Please take this opportunity to visit one of two national parks in the Natchez area: the Natchez Trace Parkway and Natchez National Historical Park. This year, which coincides with the Natchez Tricentennial Year, will feature several special events in the Natchez area. The week will kick off at 1:00 Sunday with the grand opening of The Natchez Shop in the Natchez Visitor Center at 640 South Canal Street.This partnership facility serves as the primary visitor center for Natchez National Historical Park as well as the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway.Special new merchandise includes a variety of Natchez Tricentennial items. Light refreshments will be served, along with door prizes. Free public tours of the Melrose mansion will be available at 10:00 and 11:00 am, 2:00 and 3:00 pm on April 17, 18, 19, 20, and 24.The mansion features a new historic furnished bathroom exhibit that includes the original bathing fixtures from the Dunleith mansion. The Melrose landscape also features new historic fencing and accessible pathways. The William Johnson House will be open all day on April 21-23. It is always free to visit. |
