The Gambel’s Quail is found in the dry deserts of the American Southwest. This species is a poor flyer. The quail’s long-toed feet allow for walking and feeding on the ground in search of seeds, insects, and water. They are also able to go up into shrubs and low trees in search of berries. Gambel’s Quails also have a shorter back toe that does not touch the ground when walking or running. Both sexes have the forward-facing topknot of feathers. They are most active in the morning and evening, during the cooler times of the day.
