Sitting Room

(Vertical log construction)

2021

During the 1830s, Julia Dent's father, Colonel Frederick Dent, enlarged the main house. He had a separate cabin built of vertical logs in the French Colonial style attached to the side of the home. It was covered with clapboard siding to match the original structure. A portion of the vertical log wall is visible in this image.

The exterior vertical log wall became an interior kitchen wall when the first floor kitchen was constructed in 1868. The clapboard siding was removed, wood lathe strips were nailed over the logs, and the walls plastered to create a smooth surface.
