Fireman Mannequin

StudioEIS, Brooklyn
1995

A fireman's primary job was to ensure an adequate supply of steam for the locomotive engineer. This was done by maintaining a supply of fuel to the fire, and by maintaining the boiler water level so that it always covered the firebox crown sheet.  As steam-powered locomotives were replaced by diesel engines, this position was gradually phased out.
