“Last Full Measure of Devotion” at Monocacy National Battlefield, May 25–27

FREDERICK, Md.—This Memorial Day Weekend, Monocacy National Battlefield will honor the 2,200 soldiers who fell at the battlefield 155 years ago. You’re invited to help place 2,200 flags near the visitor center to remember the fallen, and to participate in volunteer and ranger-led programs over the weekend.

On Memorial Day, volunteer reenactors with the 87th PA and Monocacy Field Music will present a color guard and music at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The park will participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. Park staff and visitors will pause for one minute of silence to pay tribute to the men and women who have died in service to our country.

The event is free and open to the public on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers assisting with the flags should arrive at the visitor center at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Since 2008, the park has commemorated Memorial Day with a temporary installation of historic flags. The flags honor the 1,300 Union and 900 Confederate soldiers that gave “the last full measure of devotion” at the July 9, 1864, Battle of Monocacy.
