National Park Service rangers are working with San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officers in the search for a lost hiker in a remote section of Mojave National Preserve. A 67 year old woman became separated from her 64 year old male hiking companion on the afternoon of Saturday June 7 while hiking in Piute Canyon, about 40 miles northwest of Needles, California. Her companion reported her missing on Sunday evening. Rangers and Sheriff’s officers, utilizing a county helicopter, began searching on Sunday night. The search continued all day on Monday. About twenty searchers combed the canyons and ridges around Piute Springs, and a Sheriff’s helicopter was in the air for much of the day. The San Bernardino County Sheriff Office is leading the investigation, while National Park Service rangers and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officers are co-managing the search. The missing woman is a 67 year old female of Filipino descent. She was last seen wearing a white long-sleeved blouse, denim shorts, white tennis shoes and a denim “San Luis Obispo” ball cap.
