The National Park Service has closed a 1.5-mile section of Colosseum Mine Road to motor vehicle traffic. Recent storm activity has eroded the road as it passes through Colosseum Gorge, making the road surface unstable and unsafe. Colosseum Mine Road connects the east side of the Clark Mountain Range to Interstate 15 south of Primm, Nevada. The popular rock climbing area on Clark Mountain is not affected by the closure. Those wishing to visit the Colosseum Mine area can continue to do so via the powerline road to the north. Rangers recommend that visitors carry a good map since the maze of dirt roads in the area can be confusing. Detailed maps can be purchased at Kelso Depot Visitor Center, Hole- in-the- Wall Information Center, or Barstow Headquarters Office. Planning for road repairs is currently underway, and park managers expect the work to be complete and the road reopened by March 2010.
