Public Review Notice –Environmental Assessment to Re-route the Barber Peak Loop Trail Outside of Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, Mojave National Preserve The National Park Service (NPS) has prepared an environmental assessment (EA) to analyze the environmental effects of re-routing Barber Peak Loop Trail Outside of Hole-in-the-Wall Campground, Mojave National Preserve. The Barber Peak Loop Trail was created in 1997 to provide visitors a six-mile loop trail that can be completed as part of a day-visit to the Hole-in-the-Wall area. It is comprised of segments of other trails and old road, and connects to the northern end of the Hole-in-the-Wall campground. Currently, trail users have to traverse the length of the campground, then follow a road back to the day-use picnic area and parking lot. It is confusing to day users how to return to their vehicles. Moreover, many day users are uncomfortable walking through the campground and by occupied campsites as part of the trail experience. The National Park Service proposes to re-route the Barber Peak Loop outside of the Hole-in-the Wall campground for several reasons. Moving the trail away from the campground averts potential conflicts between trail users and campground occupants. It completes the loop so that the trail starts and finishes at the same point–in this case, the trailhead at the day-use parking lot and picnic area. The Environmental Assessment may be viewed at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/Barberpeaklooptrail. It is also available upon request.
