KELSO, Calif. – Mojave National Preserve will be closing the public restrooms and parking area at the Kelso Depot beginning Monday November 13th for renovations. Alternate restroom facilities include the trailhead to Kelso Dunes, Hole-in-the-Wall Picnic area, and nearby gateway communities of Baker, Primm, and Amboy.
Currently, the aging outdoor restrooms are in much-needed repair and renovation. The current facilities experience frequent issues that have forced the preserve to make emergency closures, and repairs can take weeks with the current facilities that have limited parts available.
The parking lot next to the Kelso Depot restrooms will be used as a staging area for workers, construction material and equipment. The Kelso Parking area will be closed as well.
“The area will be closed to protect public safety, as it will be congested with workers and equipment," added Debra Hughson Acting Park Superintendent, “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make these important facility upgrades to serve our visitors in the Kelso area.”
Mojave National Preserves encourages visitors to prepare and plan for this closure by preplanning their routes with other available restrooms either before or after entering the preserve. The nearest restroom facility is located at Kelso Dunes Trailhead, approximately 12 miles south of the Kelso Depot. Other alternative locations outside the preserve include Baker, CA located 35 miles northwest of Kelso, or Primm, NV located 51 miles northeast of the Kelso Area.
The renovation is expected to be complete by mid January 2024. Status of this and other facilities will be updated at go.nps.gov/MojaveConditions.
