Annual Winter Celebration at Lindenwald Announced for 2018

What do hops, madeira wine, and Martin Van Buren have in common? In 1782, you could find all three in a tavern!

The staff at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site invites the public to join us for our annual Winter Celebration at Lindenwald on Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2. The Kinderhook Garden Club will decorate the first floor of Van Buren’s home to evoke the origins of his political career in the family tavern. Due to the popularity of this event, hours have been expanded to two days to accommodate more visitors. The house will be open for tours from 12:30 to 3:30 both days, with a tour beginning every half hour.

The event is free, but due to limited space in the mansion, all visitors must reserve a spot on a tour. Reservations can be made online at any time, or by phone Monday-Friday between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm by calling 518-758-9689 and selecting option zero.

Please plan to check in at the park visitor center fifteen minutes before the beginning of your tour. The Friends of Lindenwald will provide light refreshments.

Alcohol played many important roles in Martin Van Buren’s life and political career. Born in a tavern located between New York City and Albany, Van Buren witnessed the lively political environment of the early republic in his formative years. Van Buren farmed apples for cider during his time at Lindenwald, and cider even factored into the election of 1840. Learn about these stories and more at the winter event!
