KINDERHOOK, NEW YORK – Martin Van Buren National Historic Site, the Friends of Lindenwald, and the Village of Kinderhook invite the community to participate in the annual observance of Martin Van Buren’s birthday.

On Monday, December 5, 2022, at 11 am, community leaders and park staff will gather at the Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery. A graveside ceremony will commemorate Martin Van Buren’s life and role within the community. The program will include a wreath laying and some remarks about his life.

On December 5, 1782, Martin Van Buren was born in a modest family tavern in Kinderhook and returned to the town following his one term as president in 1841. He spent the next twenty years as a political candidate, an innovative farmer, and an engaged community member. This ceremony remembers not only Van Buren’s contributions in the political realm, but also his experience as a resident of his native town.

Martin Van Buren’s gravesite is located at 2 Kindertree Dr, Kinderhook, NY 12106. Attendees should prepare for an outdoor ceremony in December. Warm clothes, hats and gloves are recommended.
