Manzanar National Historic Site will expand hours of operation for its visitor center effective May 1, 2022. The center will be open from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm five days per week (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). With seasonal staffing, visitor center hours are expected to expand to seven days per week in mid-June.
“We are excited to continue making the site and visitor center more accessible to everyone,” Acting Superintendent Patrick Taylor said. “We look forward to sharing the important lessons that can be learned at Manzanar. Everyone is invited to come visit the site, either again or for the first time, to see how relevant this history is to us today.”
The visitor center features 8,000 square feet of exhibits as well as a bookstore operated by the non-profit Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association. Photographer Shane Sato’s “Go For Broke Spirit” exhibit is currently featured showing contemporary—and contemplative—photos of Japanese American veterans of World War II.
Manzanar’s Block 14 barracks, mess hall, and latrine interpret the experiences of individuals, families, and communities incarcerated at Manzanar. They are open daily from 9:00 am to 4:15 pm. The site itself is open from dawn to dusk, offering a 3-mile self-guided auto tour as well as opportunities to explore Manzanar on foot. Features include numerous gardens and ponds built by Japanese Americans to beautify their surroundings. Visitors can also explore century-old orchards from the pre-war town of Manzanar.
More than 117,000 people visited Manzanar in 2021. In that time, social scientists estimate that the site supported nearly 100 local jobs and contributed more than $7,000,000 to the economy.
Manzanar National Historic Site is located at 5001 Hwy. 395, six miles south of Independence, California. Admission is free.
