Press Release/E-blast The Manassas National Battlefield Park, a unit of the National Park Service (NPS), made available for public review today the Manassas National Battlefield Park Fire Management Plan/Environmental Assessment (EA).The EA evaluates management options for the update of the Fire Management Plan. This EA describes three alternatives for the Fire Management Plan update for Manassas National Battlefield Park (Manassas) as well as the environment that would be affected by the alternatives and the environmental consequences of implementing these alternatives. The NPS has identified "Alternative 2:Prescribed Fire, Fire Suppression, and Mechanical and Chemical Fuels Management" as the preferred alternative. Under this alternative, prescribed fire, mechanical, and chemical methods would be used where and when appropriate to manage fuels, promote biodiversity and ecosystem health, and maintain and/or restore historic landscapes. Specific areas where these treatments could be used would be identified. The 45-day comment period for this project will begin on December 5, 2014, and conclude on January 19, 2015. The EA considered potential impacts to the natural and manmade environments including: soils, vegetation, water resources, wildlife and habitat, air quality, visitor use and experience, park management and operations, public health and safety, and cultural resources.
