An internship within the Division of Intepretation, Education, and Visitor Services at Manassas National Battlefield Park provides an unforgettable, invaluable experience! Please note: We are no longer seeking interns for 2024. We look forward to opening up this opportunity again in 2025! What do interns do?Park interns work as a part of a team on the "front lines" of history by serving the public and sharing the past with modern visitors, fine-tuning both their research and presentation skills. Our internship program is an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to apply knowledge learned in the classroom, gain experience, meet professionals in the field, and often to determine which aspect of their chosen field is of greatest interest.Among the ways our interns do this is through staffing visitor contact stations such as our Visitor Center and the Brawner Farm, presenting walking tours and programs to the public, working on the park's social media, answering emails from the public requesting information, assisting museum staff on housekeeping duties, and completing other special projects as needed. What kind of training or education is required for this internship?Park interns should ideally demonstrate an interest in history, education, or social sciences through relevant study or coursework, and should demonstrate a passion for this study in their application materials and interview. When they arrive at the battlefield, interns spend their first two weeks aquiring the relevant training, orientation, and preparation for the job before assuming front line duties. During the course of the internship, interns are mentored and coached by their supervisor. What types of internships are available? While the park may offer a variety of internships in various divisions, the most needed and critical to our operations is the position of historical interpreter. Interns constitute a core part of our summer work force, and weekend work may be required. Internships may be avaialble other times of the year and with other divisions based on projects that need to be completed, such as in the spring when the battlefield welcomes large numbers of students on field trips.Where do interns live?Interns share park housing with seasonal employees and other volunteers, and must participate in housecleaning assignments. Interns may either have their own room or share with a roommate. The housing units have all necessary amenities (including laundry) and meet the standards to be audibly and visually accessible. Housing may be available based on need. What about transportation?Park interns will need a vehicle to be able to complete their internship if they are living in park housing. This is because park facilities as well as grocery stores and other needed services are not within walking distance of that housing. How do I apply? We are no longer seeking interns for 2024. We look forward to opening up this opportunity again in 2025!If you have any questions, please contact us. Internship and volunteer opportunities are listed on volunteer.gov when available. Thank you for your interest in internships at Manassas National Battlefield Park! |
