Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park will host a program that will celebrate the 26th anniversary of the “I Have a Dream” World Peace Rose Garden Inspirational Message of Peace Contest. The program will take place on Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church at 407 Auburn Avenue, N.E.
The event will celebrate the winners of the National Park Service and International World Peace Rose Garden’s Inspirational Messages of Peace Contest. To participate in the contest students from Italy, Mexico, Japan, Gaza, Pakistan, India, China, an Israeli/Palestinian school, and the United States submit their poems that promote world peace. Students express the ideals of the rose garden or an aspect of peace, in short poetic prose. During the ceremony, the contest winners will read their poems inside the Ebenezer Baptist Church. The winning poems are engraved on individual plaques and placed throughout the rose garden and act as points of inspiration to those that visit the garden. An unveiling ceremony of the engraved messages will take place after the event at the church, at the Rose Peace Garden, located near the Park’s Visitor Center at 450 Auburn Ave, N.E.
This year the keynote speaker for the program will be Mrs. Arndrea King, who will speak about world peace and the founding of The King Center by her mother-inlaw, Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Thousands of students from around the world have participated in the World Peace Rose Garden Inspirational Message of Peace Contest since its inception in 1993.
Superintendent Judy Forte states, “This year, more than 1800 students from India, Gaza, Mexico, California and Georgia participated in this creative writing competition, which serves as an excellent tool to evaluate the upcoming generation of global class citizens and leaders.”
The 2019 engraved messages will remain on display for visitors to read, reflect and contemplate until May of 2019.
